đ️ Chalazion (Eye Boil): Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
By: Ganpotik Health Desk
Our eyes are among the most delicate and vital organs in the human body. Even minor negligence or unclean habits can cause various eye diseases. One of the most common among them is Chalazion, which is popularly known as an eye boil (Anjoni) in Bengali.
đ What Is a Chalazion?
Inside the eyelids, there are several Meibomian glands that produce oil to prevent dryness of the eyes. When one of these glands gets blocked, the oil and dead cells accumulate inside, forming a lump — this is called a Chalazion (Anjoni).
đ§ Remember:A chalazion is not caused by bacteria or viruses — it happens due to a blocked gland.
⚠️ Common Causes of Chalazion
Although the exact cause is not always clear, the following factors often lead to the development of a chalazion:
-
Exposure to dust and pollution.
-
Touching the eyes with unwashed or dirty hands.
-
Lack of regular eye cleaning or hygiene.
-
Oily skin or excessive oil secretion.
-
Improper removal of cosmetics or eye makeup.
These factors clog the openings of the Meibomian glands, trapping oil and debris, which eventually form a hard lump on the eyelid.
đ️ Symptoms and Signs
If you have a chalazion, you may experience the following:
-
A small, firm lump or swelling on the eyelid.
-
The lump usually appears away from the edge of the eyelid.
-
Generally painless, but may cause mild discomfort or heaviness.
-
Watery eyes, burning sensation, or blurry vision if it becomes large.
-
Pressure on the cornea may cause vision disturbances when the lump grows bigger.
đĄ Good news:A chalazion is not contagious and does not spread from one eye to another.
đŦ Difference Between Stye and Chalazion
Many people confuse a stye with a chalazion, but they are two distinct conditions.
Comparison | Chalazion | Stye |
---|---|---|
Cause | Blocked Meibomian gland | Bacterial infection |
Pain | Usually painless | Painful and tender |
Appearance | Firm lump, less red | Red, swollen, pus-filled |
Treatment | Warm compress, ointment | Antibiotic and warm compress |
Duration | 4–6 weeks | Heals within a few days |
Sometimes, a stye may develop into a chalazion if not properly treated.
đŠē Treatment
According to Dr. Faisal Imon,
“Most chalazions heal naturally within 7 to 10 days. However, if it persists, warm compresses and antibiotic eye drops or ointments may be prescribed.”
Treatment steps:
-
Warm Compress: Apply a warm, clean cloth over the eyelid for 5–10 minutes, 2–3 times a day.
-
Medications: Use antibiotic or anti-inflammatory eye drops or ointments as advised by your doctor.
-
Minor Surgery: If the lump doesn’t heal after 4–6 weeks, minor surgical drainage may be needed to remove trapped oil and debris.
đĄ️ Prevention Tips
Follow these habits to prevent chalazion formation:
-
Always wash your hands before touching your eyes.
-
Wear sunglasses in dusty or windy environments.
-
Clean eye makeup thoroughly before sleep.
-
Keep contact lenses clean and disinfected.
-
Rinse your eyes gently with clean water daily.
